Uniquely ZU

The Zayed University Student Experience

  • Overview

Uniquely ZU is the new student experience at Zayed University — a flagship initiative designed to equip students with the essential skills needed to thrive in life, work, and further study.

At its core is the Uniquely ZU Capabilities Framework, a structured, research-driven model grounded in global best practice and local relevance. The framework integrates 18 core capabilities that scaffold personal, professional, and leadership growth across the student journey. By embedding skill-building into every aspect of university life — from co-curricular activities and campus events to leadership roles and volunteering — students develop and continuously level up real-world capabilities such as leadership, creativity, collaboration, and communication, ensuring every graduate is genuinely future-ready.

Skill Articulation

Through a structured framework, students learn to recognize, track, and confidently communicate the value of their experiences using tools such as the co-curricular transcript.

Holistic Development

By engaging purposefully across academic, co-curricular, and community experiences, students develop as well-rounded, self-aware graduates.

Career Readiness

The program equips students with the practical skills, confidence, and evidence they need to excel in interviews, strengthen their CVs, and thrive in the workplace.

Strategic Alignment

Designed in line with institutional goals and national priorities, the initiative strengthens ZU’s contribution to upskilling, innovation, and civic responsibility.

Uniquely ZU Milestones Summary

The Uniquely ZU Journey

1) Research & Benchmarking

The program is built on a foundation of extensive study of leading universities (Cambridge, Manchester, Swinburne, Charles Sturt, Rochester), coupled with a global report by McKinsey, “Defining the skills citizens will need in the future world of work,” which allowed us to identify the following key trends:

  • There is a growing global consensus: collaboration, adaptability, critical thinking, leadership, and communication consistently emerge as essential competencies.
  • Effective frameworks employ tiered development, digital tracking, and recognition systems.
  • Few global institutions offer a full competency framework and none do so solely via co-curricular activities – creating room for innovation and positioning ZU as a thought leader regionally.

2) Design & Development

Using global data and internal consultation with faculty, students, and employers, the team streamlined 56 skills into 20 (later refined to 18) student-friendly capabilities grouped under:

  • Personal Development
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Professional Readiness
  • Leadership & Influence
  • Creativity & Application

Each capability is defined in accessible language and scaffolded across three tiers — Developing, Achieving, and Excelling — enabling personalized growth.

3) Mapping & Implementation

Capabilities are mapped directly to both curricular and co-curricular activities. Initially, these mappings were confined to Student Affairs, but we are now expanding to include a wider variety of activities across the campus.

As the program develops, we plan to implement a tier-based recognition system (Core, Silver, Gold, Uniquely ZU) that incentivizes engagement and is awarded as students complete their studies at ZU. Our ambition, ultimately, is that such an award would act as a recognizable demonstration of attainment amongst our industry partners, thus further building ZU's reputation for creating desirable graduates.

4) Pilot & Refinement

Piloted with 2,500 first-year students and 40 high-achieving students, the framework was tested, refined, and validated through feedback from students, faculty, and industry professionals.

Final refinements aligned the framework with the ZU strategic priorities and the "We the UAE 2031" vision, introducing capabilities such as digital agility, wellbeing, and cultural expression.

5) From Vision to Impact

The Uniquely ZU Capability Framework exemplifies innovation, evidence-based design, and strategic implementation, characterized by:

  • Aligning global best practice with local relevance.
  • Embedding employability and personal growth into every stage of the ZU journey.

This positions Zayed University as a regional leader in holistic student development and a pioneer of co-curricular capability frameworks. The result is a unified, data-driven model that transforms student engagement into measurable, career-ready skills — strengthening ZU's identity, impact, and contribution to national priorities.

  • The UZU Portal

We understand that transmitting the value of skill-building to ZU students requires meeting them on their own terms. The Uniquely ZU portal thus serves as our bridge, enabling us to quickly and easily reach our students.

The portal is a vibrant online hub where we harness gamification and connectivity to strengthen the relationship between skills and co-curricular experiences at ZU. Ultimately, the opportunities for students to strengthen their leadership skills, engage in campus activities, and explore new experiences all live on the portal.

  • UZU Events & Activities

Students have access to all Student Affairs events and activities through the portal. Our centralized calendar, with skill-tagging based on events, allows them to engage with many opportunities and build up their skills in the process.

The portal has also proven useful to maintain a sense of community, engagement, and personal student growth even during academic breaks (e.g., winter and summer holidays).

A student's submission history during the “Reflections & Resolutions Challenge” campaign, hosted on the portal:

  • UZU Engagement Tracks

The platform also hosts tracks and checklists with all available opportunities for students to gain “Capability Tokens,” a representation of an entry on their Uniquely ZU Transcript. The activities range from joining a club to attending professional development coaching sessions, and more. Much like events, each activity is tagged based on the relevant capabilities it helps students develop.

  • The Uniquely ZU Transcript

Traditionally, co-curricular transcripts have served as records of learning and growth beyond the classroom — documenting workshops, certifications, and other developmental experiences.

At Zayed University, we have made a conscious decision to redesign the concept of a “CCT” so that it primarily focuses on skill development rather than simply listing activities or events.

  • This outcomes-based approach highlights the tangible capabilities students gain through Uniquely ZU — connecting each experience to industry-relevant skills and real-world impact. Sitting alongside the academic transcript and visually aligned with the Uniquely ZU brand, the new UZU Transcript is designed to be student-friendly, engaging, and empowering — enabling students to articulate their skills with confidence, demonstrate readiness for the workplace, and tell the authentic story of their development journey through diverse personal examples.

Reinvigorating Student Affairs

Now with a strong foundation and direction towards skill building, Student Affairs has used Uniquely ZU to revisit, refine, and expand its offering to improve the overall student experience. Through this renewed approach, the division has aligned every aspect of student engagement with purpose and impact — ensuring that each experience contributes meaningfully to personal growth, employability, and future readiness.

We’ve launched a mix of compulsory and voluntary co-curricular experiences through our framework. Our students are encouraged to follow their interests while gaining meaningful progress toward desirable skills and capabilities. They also have access to powerful, interactive tools that help them showcase their growth and demonstrate the potential impact they can have on the wider world.

Positioning Zayed University as a
Regional Thought Leader

Zayed University is increasingly recognized as a regional thought leader in student engagement, capability development, and innovation in career readiness. Building on the success of Uniquely ZU, the university has actively shared its pioneering practices with the wider higher education community.

We have hosted two regional symposiums that showcased ZU’s work in this space — the first bringing together Student Affairs professionals from across the GCC, and the second, a roundtable discussion held in collaboration with the UAE’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR), focused on employability and future skills.

At the 2025 MENASA NASPA Conference, our team presented Uniquely ZU to regional peers. The team also presented at the 2026 Global First Year Experience Conference in Seattle, further highlighting ZU’s growing influence and innovative approach to student development.

In recognition of our successful implementation of the CampusGroups platform, the platform’s parent company, Ready Education, has appointed Zayed University as a regional partner. We now host and support multiple institutions, demonstrating how digital solutions can advance strategic goals and enhance the student experience.

Building on this momentum, we are preparing to welcome delegations from universities in Singapore and Cairo, as well as from others across the region, who seek to learn from ZU’s scalable, measurable model of student engagement and capability development.

Most recently, Zayed University was awarded Gold in the Merit in Innovative Practices category at the NASPA MENASA Recognition Awards, marking a major milestone in the University’s efforts to reshape the student experience through our Uniquely ZU initiative.
